Apple M1 Ultra benchmark test resultsīefore we get into the GPU performance tests, it’s clear that the M1 Ultra excels at multi-core workflows, but it doesn’t decry the competition across the board. The gaming PCs I just mentioned all accomplish the same task faster, over 30 seconds faster in the case of the Origin Millennium.

The ultra-powered studio also proved slower to transcode video than the aforementioned gaming PC, taking about 4 minutes to transcode 4K video to 1080p using Handbrake. However, as you can see from the chart of results below, the M1 Ultra couldn’t match its Intel-powered competition in terms of CPU single-core performance. Specifically, the M1 Ultra beats the Alienware Aurora R13 desktop we tested recently (w/ Intel Core i7-12700KF, GeForce RTX 3080, 32GB of RAM), an original Millennium (2022) review (Core i9-12900K CPU, RTX 3080 Ti GPU, 32GB RAM), and the even more 3090-equipped HP Omen 45L we tested recently (Core i9-12900K, GeForce RTX 3090, 64GB RAM) in Geekbench 5.4 Multi-Core CPU Benchmark.

We ran the M1 Ultra through the Geekbench 5.4 CPU benchmarking test several times, and after averaging the results, we found that the M1 Ultra actually outperformed the top-of-the-line Windows gaming PC in terms of multi-core CPU performance.

Since our M1 Ultra is the best you can buy (approximately priced at $6,199) it sports a 20-core CPU and a 64-core GPU as well as 128GB of integrated memory (RAM) and a 2TB SSD. Specifically, we ran the Ultra through the Geekbench 5.4 CPU benchmark to understand how effectively it handles single-core and multi-core workflows.

That latter claim may be true, but in terms of real-world performance it’s clear that the M1 Ultra can’t match Nvidia’s and AMD’s best GPUs. This slide from Apple’s March press event promises that the M1 Ultra can deliver GPU performance comparable to Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3090 while still getting less power.

We’re currently in the middle of testing our ultra-equipped Mac Studio (as well as the new 5K Apple Studio display launching with it), but we’ve already run several useful benchmarks that let us verify the veracity of Apple’s performance. Let’s look at the numbers, shall we?
